I remember when I first discovered the work of Jon Williams. It was one cold, dark, wintry night a few years ago at Leicester’s City Gallery Open exhibition.
This is an exhibition where gallery staff accept submissions from members of the public, who if lucky enough, will have their work displayed in the City Gallery from the beginning of November until early January. There were three of his little ceramic figures on display that year & I fell in love with them instantly. Unfortunately they had already been sold & his other pieces that have been accepted into the Open exhibition in later years have sold quickly too.
If you were to glance quickly at his ceramic figures, you could be forgiven for thinking that they are made quickly & in a hurry. There’s an overall roughness around them – but take a second to look & you’ll start to notice the wonderful detail that he adds to his work. You can see tiny tiny teeth in the tiny mouths of his figures & the colour & glazes of his figures are just fantastic. They all have wonderful expressions!
He currently has an exhibition on in The Upstairs Gallery at the City Gallery entitled ‘Shh, Just Act Normal.’ The exhibition runs until Saturday 12th December 2009. I’d recommend popping down to The City Gallery to have a look at the exhibition & his work would make wonderful Christmas presents! Just remember to leave one of the foxes in the bins for me – I can’t get back down to the City Gallery to buy one until Saturday.
Here are a few more photos from ‘Shh, Just Act Normal’ to entice you;
Hang on! I’ve seen this one man and his dog in the city centre!
